History

This 54.17 acres property is located within the Lower Maitland subwatershed. The Lower Maitland River Valley is a landscape worth protecting, as it is one of few in the Country, Region and Province with a continuous forest cover and many natural heritage features, such as fish habitat, limestone outcroppings and a gorge.

Features

The southeast of the property is dominated by white pine that was planted in the late 1980’s, with every eighth row planted with Norway spruce. These trees are in good shape, with little damage incurred from the white pine weevil, blister rust and porcupine feeding. Hardwood species dominate the understory. The north and central areas consist of mature upland hardwood trees. These areas are dominated by maple, but also include American beech, and black cherry. Along the eastern and southern borders of the property, there exists a black walnut grove. Large sections of the central and southern parts of the property are white cedar forest, while the southwest corner is a white pine plantation, with white cedar and black cherry in its understory. Some areas along the river have a steep slope. The diversity of forest stand composition on this site makes it ideal habitat for a large variety of flora and fauna.

Location

If driving north on Huron road, make a right on Sharpes Creek Line.
