Mad River - Stephens

History

The Stephens family has been working together with EBC to help protect the Mad River in Glencairn, Ontario. We began working with them in 2009 and since then have been building on an original 3 acres. We now completed the full 111-acre nature reserve along the Mad River, adjacent to the Glencairn Conservation Area.

Significant Features

The Stephens property is located in Glencairn adjacent to the Glencairn Conservation Area. The Stephens property is heavily treed with no recent harvesting and is dissected by the Mad River. The Mad River is fast running, shaded in places with some trees down providing shelter for fish. Species at risk present on this reserve include the Five-lined Skink, Whip-poor-will and Snapping Turtle. This reserve has a trail that starts at the Glencairn Conservation Area parking lot and follows the river east to Concession Road 3. With the help of the Stephens family, EBC can prevent gravel pits from expanding any further and encroaching on the Mad River ecosystem.

Location

The Stephens Reserve is located in Glencairn, Ontario adjacent to the Glencairn Conservation Area. Start at Mansfield on Airport Road and head 17 km north to Mulmur Nottawasaga Townline. Head east to the Shell gas station in Glencairn, and then north to Webster Road. Continue west on Webster Road a few hundred meters to the parking at the Glencairn Conservation Area.

The Ganaraska Trail is located along the north side of the River.
